About the Seminar:

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive, three-dimensional imaging technique that offers close-to-histology-level image quality. Based on broadband spectral interferometry, OCT has enabled clinical applications ranging from ophthalmology to cardiology that revolutionized in vivo medical diagnostics. In this seminar I will first talk about my PhD research which was about miniaturization of a spectral-domain OCT system through integrated optics. This approach has a high potential to overcome current limitations of an OCT system owing to its cost, size, complexity, and the need for accurate alignment. In the second half of the seminar I will talk about my current research which is about a novel imaging system called OCT-vibrography for assessing biomechanical properties of tissues and a design of an ultra-high resolution OCT system for imaging circulating tumor cells in the blood flow.

About the Speaker:

Imran Avci graduated from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, Bilkent University, Turkey in 2006. She obtained her M.Sc. degree from the Material Science and Nanotechnology Program, Bilkent University in 2008. Later she moved to the University of Twente, The Netherlands, from where she got her PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science Department in 2012. During her graduate study, she focused on designing a miniaturized optical coherence tomography (OCT) system using integrated optics. Since April 2013 she is a research fellow at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. She is leading two projects; ultra-high resolution OCT system for circulating tumor cell imaging and OCT-vibrography for assessing biomechanical properties of cornea and ear drum.
